The Montana Mining Association (MMA) is pleased to announce the winners of our third annual essay contest for Montana eighth grade students. Each year, Montana eighth graders are eligible to enter the contest by submitting a short essay on a specific topic chosen by the Montana Mining Association’s Education Committee. The essays are scored by members of the committee and the top three essays yield monetary scholarships, publication in our 2015 Montana Mining Magazine and on our website, www.montanamining.org. In addition, the winners will be invited to be our guests and to present before our members at the Montana Mining Association’s Annual Meeting in the late spring of 2015.

Invitations to Montana eighth grade students were distributed to 319 public, private and home school contacts. The MMA received 104 entries. All of the entries were wonderful and the students exhibited interesting and diverse approaches to the topic. The creativity, personal viewpoints, and knowledge gained from the contemplation and research of the topic made for very fun and exciting reading by our judging panel. The judging was very difficult because many entries were worthy of being winners. All the students who entered the contest are to be commended for their hard work and wonderful submissions. The MMA would also like to also acknowledge the teachers and parents of the many students who entered the contest. The teachers distributed the contest information and encouraged entries. Some teachers involved entire classrooms in the project. Thank you to the exceptional students, teachers and parents!
